Amrita Amrita (Devanagari: अम्रित) is a Sanskrit word that literally means "that which is immortal" and is often translated in texts as nectar. In Hinduism, amrita is often referred to as the drink of the gods that bestows them with immortality. According to the story told in the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana, the Samudra Manthan ("The Churning of the Ocean of Milk"), the gods began to lose their immortality due to a curse by the sage Durvasa. With the help of the asuras (demons), they beat the sea to find the nectar of immortality, amrita. After drinking it, the gods regain their immortality and defeat the demons. According to another myth told in the Mahabharata, amrita was stolen by the king of birds Garuda, who was supposed to take the drink to snakes that had captured his mother. Garuda defeats the gods led by Indra in battle, flies through the spokes of a wheel (symbol of the sun) blocking the way to amrita and kills two snakes guarding it. However, Garuda made an alliance with Indra, promising that he would help him recover the drink after he had given it to the snakes. During the ritual ablution before drinking the amrita, which the snakes perform at Garuda's direction, Indra steals their drink and carries it back to heaven. In yogic philosophy, amrita is a liquid, which can flow from the pituitary gland into the throat during deep states of meditation. According to some yogic texts, one drop of it is enough to defeat death and achieve immortality.
